What’s Contained Inside Two Vintage Safes in Milton, New Hampshire?

Conor Makem/Times photo Milton Townhouse Stewardship Committee volunteer Emery Booska teasingly tries a crow bar on an antique safe from the mid-1800s.

Here’s another interesting story similar to one of our older posts where one of the vintage safes have been unlocked for almost six decades. Now officials are asking anyone if they have the combo or key to reveal what’s inside. A Milton town safe was closed and locked since the 1950’s and the owner or whoever had the combination or key to the safe has since disappeared. After 60 years, town officials and townspeople are now eager and curious to see what’s contained inside.

Dating back even further through time, another safe is getting some attention. The safe that is only 20 feet away from the first safe dates back in the mid-1800s, that has brought forth mystery and secrecy. The safe was last opened back in 1975, celebrating and preparing for its country’s bicentennial. It has been over 35 years since, and just like the first safe, the key has since disappeared.

“We think the key to the older safe might be in the 1950s safe,” said Milton Town Administrator, Tony Mincu. Mincu explained that if there is no one who has the combination or key to the newer safe, and then a specialist will be called in to break it open. If the newer safe contains the key to the older safe, then it will save time and effort in trying to crack open the older safe. Mincu also added that the safe specialist believes the older safe will be harder to crack open than the newer safe even though the newer safe was built many years after the older safe.

“There are four to five steel tumblers that meet in the middle, and there are two rows of them,” said Mincu describing the older lock. “I can’t even imagine what the key looks like.” The older lock is rare and unique, that the safe specialist has even offered to buy the piece of historic artifact from the town. However, that did not bode well with the town historians who know the mid-1800s safe was built by Sylvanus A. Denio of Bakersfield, Vermont and passed away in 1892. Denio built the first depository safes used in Boston as his New York Times obituary proclaims.

The last time it was opened dating back in the 1970s, the town historians have a good idea of what contents lie inside the older safe says Doreen Valente. Valente is the Milton Board of Selectmen secretary and briefly remembers that the older safe has been storing and holding Civil War records and books, original receipts for land and tax information, data of sales of properties and even some historical items that date back all the way to the 1700s.

On the other hand, no one has a clue of what’s contained inside the newer safe dating back to the 1950’s. The town historians are expecting and hoping they’ll find the town’s lost Boston Post Cane or other historical documents.

“I’m hoping there’s an original copy of the Declaration of Independence,” said Mincu jokingly. “As stewards of the records, so to speak, we should establish what’s in (the safes) and preserve whatever we find.” He said that whatever the safes contains, it will most likely go to the town clerk who is the record keeper of the town and some of the other items heading over to the Milton Historical Society.

Robbers Steal An Estimated $27,000 from Grocery Store

In the city of St. Charles, the police are investigating a burglarized grocery store.  The La Huerta Supermarket was robbed an estimated amount of $27,000, according to the police reports. The police drove over to the crime scene after the alarm was triggered. The burglary took place on July 29th where the police found the back door of the store open and the grocery store ransacked.

Inside the store two safes were completely pried open and emptied out. One of the safes contained approximately $25,000 in cash and checks and the second safe held about $2,000. The owner of the store told the police that most of the money came from transfer services that the business offers.  The burglars were able to get inside and rob the store without being caught by creating a hole at the top of the roof. The police found three different sets of footprints on the roof. The owner even mentioned that maybe one of the burglars tried to unplug the camera system, but failed.

If you are a business owner, stories like this could be a complete nightmare, especially for small businesses. You have profits that you accumulated throughout the years only to find out all your hard work and hard earned profits disappear in a matter of minutes. We can’t assume that the owners did not prepare for the worse or invested in high quality safes, but we can say that it didn’t take long for the burglars to gain access. The only thing we can suggest is to make sure you invest in the best quality and highest security to protect your valuables. This doesn’t just go for business owners, but even for homeowners who need to protect their precious belongings from theft.

As a business owner, you should always take extra measures to protect your valuables and cash. You should never keep your guard down, especially when it comes to protecting your money. The best safes are built with the high strength and durable steel to withstand physical attacks and forced attempts. High security safes defend against break-in attempts and attempts at prying it open. High quality safes have the necessary security features such as non-removable hinges and thick steel diameter locking bolts that resist any attempts at getting inside. If you need to organize your cash flow and make quick deposits with money bags, envelopes and checks then investing in depository safes are a necessity. However, if you want even more protection and higher security from theft, then you need to invest in a high security safe.

The burglary incident above shows that the burglars easily gained access just by prying it open and emptying all the contents. It seems like the safe wasn’t built with the necessary strength and security features that most safes should have. If you’re a business owner and are storing that amount of cash, then you know you need the best safe out there, not a dull, plastic safe that could be broken into in a matter of seconds. Always go with the quality product, one that you can be confident about. Don’t rely on cheap safes just because the price is right. Remember, you get what you paid for, and sometimes it can come back to haunt you in the end. Stick to an all-steel security safe that has all the primary and standard features that prevent theft. Most safes also come with an electronic lock that enhances your security to your safe, frustrating any burglar attempting to crack it open.

2-Year-Old Boy Locks Himself Inside A Safe

Here on our blog, we’ve found some peculiar and interesting articles like the mystery safe of Ann Arbor and unusual burglaries, but here’s an incident that will take you back to your childhood. Have you ever tried to play hide-and-seek with your siblings or friends around the grocery or retail store when you were a kid? You would run around the store, chasing each other, hiding in between clothing racks or inside fitting rooms or even trespassing employee areas. Well, for a 2-year-old boy in Wentzville, Missouri he might’ve found the best hiding spot. That hiding spot was a security safe that was displayed at a local Lowe’s Home Improvement Store. The boy trapped himself inside the safe while playing hide-and-seek with his 10-year-old sibling.

The Wentzville firefighters came out to save the boy this past Saturday evening. Luckily, the boy was unharmed and safe inside the safe (no pun intended). He was inside the safe for at least 20 minutes. The safe was about five feet tall, two feet wide and about 18 inches deep, said Battalion Chief Michael Scott, the spokesman for the Wentzville Fire Protection District.

Karen Cobb, a spokesman for the Lowe’s store, said that the boy was not in any danger of suffocation because the safe allowed airflow inside. Her concern was why the safe was opened in the first place. As store policy, display safes should always be closed at all times unless a customer requests to take a look inside. In addition, a combination code should have been attached to the safe for an employee to gain access, but neither of the employees was able to open the safe.

That’s when they called the fire department that received a call around 9pm that evening. It took the firefighters about 20 minutes for them to free the boy from inside the safe. They used pry bars and heavy-duty tools to break open the safe. Prior to the call, Scott wasn’t sure to how long the boy was actually stuck inside the safe. The firefighters made sure they didn’t harm the boy while they were trying to free him. They first drilled a hole in the side of the safe, which were a few inches from the top. Then they put in an oxygen tube to be sent to the boy. The boy remained composed throughout the procedure, Scott mentioned.

Capt. Kevin Pyatt of the Wentzville police said that the boy was with his mother and older sibling visiting their father who was working at the store at the time.  When the boy and his sibling were playing hide-and-seek, the boy went inside the safe and closed the door, which locks automatically. Fortunately, his sibling saw him go inside the safe. An ambulance was also at the scene to check on the boy’s condition after he was freed. “When I got there the parents were very thankful,” Scott said. “I’m a parent and if that were to happen to my child I would be very nervous, as any parent would.”

Although this story can be humorous, but also worrisome, especially for the parents, we can learn something from this incident. If you happen to have a safe of your own, make sure your safes are closed at all times and never leave it unattended. Always remember your code and if you have a keyed lock, never lock your keys inside the safe. Most importantly, keep an eye on your kids. It might be a simple and easy task to remember, but we all know how forgetful we can be.

The Perfect Solution To Every Cash-Handling Business

Do you own your own business? Do you have to manage and handle cash everyday? Well the perfect solution to organizing and keeping all your profits safe and secure is to invest in a depository safe. MESA has been the leader in the safe industry since 1981. Our bread and butter have been the depository safe. We have been improving and fine tuning its features since the growth of the company.  While refining the deposit safe for perfection, it lead us to create our own full line of high security safes, which are used for a variety of different applications. Our main focus is to provide the best possible high security safe for every type of use to provide maximum protection, excellent security and long lasting durability.

Despite the downturn of the economy in recent years, we know that many business owners are standing strong, hoping that it will get better soon. There’s no room for error or losing any hard-earned profits from theft, burglary, mishandling of cash and disorganization. It’s time that you have some type of systematic organization of your cash and other valuables. In order to increase profits, minimize budgets and prevent losses due to lack of management, the deposit safes will assist and relieve all your hassles and troubles.

MESA MFL2014 Deposit Safe

One of our most popular models in our depository safe line is the MFL2014. MESA’s MFL2014 provides just the right amount of storage space to keep your cash. It features a front-loading mailbox style deposit door to quickly make deposits into the safe. The convenience of the drop box feature allows you to load your cash, checks, receipts, envelopes and other types of currency or documentation very easily without having to open up the safe.

What about thieves or intruders forcing their way inside through the deposit door? Our money safes feature an anti-fish baffle that prevents internal theft through the deposit door. This feature thwarts off the thief from stealing any items inside the safe. Another security feature the MFL2014 contains is a high security lock to prevent theft and unauthorized users from gaining access. With the MFL2014 you have different lock options available to you. You can choose a combination dial lock and enter the correct combination to unlock the safe or you can choose a dual-keyed lock. A dual-keyed lock does not need a combination or code to be entered, but must have two security keys for both key slots in order to open up the safe. However, we recommend choosing the electronic lock. To gain access into the safe a keypad code needs to be entered. If the code is entered incorrectly multiple times then the electronic lock will go into a keypad lockout penalty. This prevents any further codes to be entered adding even more security to your safe.

What else makes the depository safe such a popular item? Many people take for granted its basic features that most safes should have. First and foremost, none of our safes are built from plastic or any other type of cheap material. Our safes are built strong with high quality steel construction to guarantee resilience and sturdiness that can withstand physical attacks from forced attempts. Other security features are thick diameter solid steel live locking bolts. Even when the electronic lock is removed and the thief is prying its way into the safe with a crowbar, the steel bolts ensure that the doors are tightly shut and prevent entry.

What Do Incoming College Freshmen Need?

Still in the middle of summer, many students aren’t even thinking about preparing for school. However, for those who will be attending their first year of college next semester or quarter, perhaps there is a lot on their mind. It’s never too early to prepare for a new experience in your life, especially if you’re leaving your hometown. Usually when it comes to preparing for college, we think about the everyday items such as laundry baskets, laptops, notebooks, backpacks, food, money, clothes, etc. Whether you are living on or off campus, having the essential college items is important when moving out to be better prepared for your first time moving out. Here’s to a new era for incoming students this fall. What do incoming freshmen really need besides the basic necessities?

Electronics and technology will be a fundamental necessity for all students, but you don’t need to spend so much on these everyday items. Most of the time, those items are already provided. The only real electronics students’ need is their own laptop and cellphone. Most, if not all colleges provide computer labs where students have access to Internet and printing. Nowadays, many students have smartphones that can also serve as a music device.

When it comes to organizing your dorm room or apartment, you can also spend a lot on unnecessary items. There won’t be too much space for you to bring in your own bed, closets, or dressers. There are a lot of different items on the market today that utilize and maximize the available space given to you. You can find twin beds that have storage underneath so that you can keep you clothes or other items inside. You also have shelf organizers to separate your shoes and clothing from each other all while managing better storage space. Hooks that go over your door can serve as a coat or jacket hanger.

As for safety, health and hygiene, we need to make sure we keep our rooms safe and clean. Make sure you got a first aid kit, hand vacuum, fresheners, wipes and hand sanitizers to keep you and your roommates from getting sick. There’s nothing worse than being sick away from home having to skip class. You’ll get so caught up in school, you’ll realize your room has turned into a dump. Take some time off the day or weekends to clean and reorganize your items.  You’ll feel a lot better and less likely to get sick.

Speaking of safety, security is one of the concerns that most college freshmen often forget. You get soaked up in the excitement with meeting new people, a new adventure, that sometimes you have your guard down. You have to remember that although most dorms and apartments are usually safe and secure, you’re still living with hundreds of other strangers in your building. Students often leave their dorm rooms open or don’t bother to lock their doors. That means you have people going in and out, discussing the next exam, borrowing textbooks or just wanting to hang out. All your items are laid out on your bed, desk or floor, its very easy for someone to just take and steal those items. Those items such as your laptop or textbooks are very expensive to replace. A wise idea for students to invest in are safes. A safe is a secure storage that restricts access with the use of a combination or electronic lock. When you’re out hanging with your friends and roommates or going back home for the weekend, a safe is an essential item to have, especially for dorms and apartments.

The ideal safes nowadays that are used for universities, hospitals, hotels and other residential buildings are hotel safes. For a college freshmen and student, the best thing about having a hotel safe is that you’ll be able to keep some extra cash, passports, important college documents, notes, laptops, textbooks, identification and other confidential information without having to worry about your parents sending it to you over the mail. You will have the peace of mind when you’re studying at the library or eating out with some friends. If your roommate invites some friends or people you don’t know, you don’t have to worry about your stuff being stolen. There are so many students that wander around the floors wanting to meet new people and most of the time don’t even lock or close their doors. That’s why having a hotel safe is a necessity for every college freshmen.

We hope this upcoming school year you have fun starting a new chapter in your life. Don’t spoil all the joy and excitement with hassles that could be prevented. Keep an open mind, be adventurous, meet new people and take in new ventures.
